Nona the Ninth[]
Before Day One[]
Following the Sixth House’s move outside the Dominican system, Master Warden Palamedes Sextus selects sixteen members of the Oversight Body to travel to New Rho to negotiate with Blood of Eden. Kiana is one of the sixteen named.[1]
When the Resurrection Beast Varun appears in the sky above New Rho, the power balance in Blood of Eden shifts, and Merv Wing abducts the Sixth House negotiators. Kiana and the others are loaded onto an ever-moving cavalcade of trucks called the Convoy and driven around the city for several months on end.[2] To avoid the blue madness caused by the Resurrection Beast, the Sixth House necromancers decide to blind themselves, but as Kiana is nonaptitude and safe from the effects of Varun, she retains her eyesight.[3]
Day Five[]
Kiana and the rest of the Oversight Body are freed from their Merv Wing captors by Ctesiphon Wing. They shelter from the fighting in the city in New Rho’s underground tunnels and are reunited with their leader, Palamedes, and his cavalier, Camilla. While Camilla and Palamedes prepare for their Lyctoral ascension, Cam requests Kiki’s presence. Kiana arrives alongside Palamedes’ mother, Juno Zeta and joins the small circle of onlookers surrounding Camilla and Palamedes. They begin the Lyctoral ritual, then Camilla’s body bursts into flames. When the flames die, a new person emerges in Camilla’s naked body. They request clothes and Kiana is quick to offer them her trousers. As she does so, her face is “stony and emotionless” but marred by “wet tracks down her cheeks.”[3]
Following the instructions of the new Lyctor, named Paul, Kiana and the rest of the Oversight Body board a megatruck. Paul and Nona drive the megatruck tumultuously through the River to an abrupt stop at the Ninth House landing field. After consulting briefly with the Oversight Body, Paul goes with Nona, Pyrrha, and Kiriona to open the Locked Tomb. Kiana remains on the megatruck with the rest of its passengers.
Appearance[]
“There was…a tall, lanky, creased young woman in grey whose face looked so startlingly like Cam’s that Nona wondered at it.”[3]
Kiana bears a strong resemblance to Camilla. Her hair is cut short—shaved nearly entirely off on both sides of her head. Her eyes are dark and set deep in her face. Nona describes her as hawk-faced.[3]
